Switzerland beckons Singapore tourists

SINGAPORE - As the Switzerland Tourism office in Singapore celebrates its first anniversary, it wants even more Singaporeans to come and visit the country that is well known for its chocolates and the Alps.
Last year, the number of Singapore visitors to Switzerland increased by about 28 per cent.

"Switzerland offers a totally different experience with four seasons and natural beauty like the mountains and the Alps," says Mr Jurg Schmid, chief executive officer of Switzerland Tourism, who was in Singapore on June 12 for the local office's anniversary celebrations.
Mr Schmid adds that factors such as safety, English-speaking people and excellent public transportation make Switzerland increasingly popular among families and those who like to travel free-and-easy.
The image of Switzerland as being a very expensive place is not entirely true, he says, adding that the prices in Singapore are comparable to what you will find in Switzerland.
"Many of the tourists from Australia and the United States are backpackers," he adds, underscoring the fact that accommodations there are not confined to luxury hotels.
This luxury image of Switzerland is possibly due to the high-end watches based in Switzerland, with annual watch and jewellery events like Basel world and the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) drawing tens of thousands of visitors.
Mr Schmid says there are plans in the next two to three years to open up some watchmaking factories to tap on the interest of the watch aficionados.
