Scoot CEO Campbell Wilson sets scorching pace of growth for the budget airline

Scoot chief executive Campbell Wilson, 41, believes he is ahead of industry standards for launching his budget airline last year in 12 extraordinary months.

Most budget babies start with one or two narrow-body 180-seat single-class aircraft serving a couple of domestic or short-haul cities, and stay that way a couple of years, he tells Life!.

"Scoot, on the other hand, started with four 400-seat two-class widebody jets, sporting a fully-bespoke onboard product just 12 months after being a spreadsheet,'' he says.

Now aloft for seven months, Scoot flies to six countries and nine international cities including Sydney, Tokyo and Shenyang.

"With a fifth 777 coming soon and 20 787s starting delivery from next year, we're not slowing down," says the New Zealander and Singapore permanent resident.

He has also created a brand and a "Scootitude" that is playful, innovative, reliable and safe, which reflects the man to a point, say his associates.

Ms Nicole Petersen, who was his former Singapore Airlines colleague in Vancouver where he held the position of vice-president for Canada, says:

"He takes his responsibilities very seriously and is definitely hands-on but he is not overly formal or officious and is personable, fun and open. Much like the brand image of Scoot."
