Balestier becoming new hotel hot spot

TWO more hotels will open their doors in Balestier, which is fast becoming one of the hottest spots for new hotels.

Days Hotel and Ramada Hotel will open in the next six months and add another 800 rooms to the area, where hotels such as the Ibisand the Aqueen are also located.

The two new hotels, which are next to Zhongshan Park, were developed by joint venture HH Properties, owned by Hiap Hoe and SuperBowl Holdings.

The hotels are part of a mixed development which includes a mall as well as an office tower, the partners said yesterday.

The development will be managed by Wyndham Hotel group, the world’s largest hotel group.

HH Properties offered $73.3 million for the Balestier site in August 2008 and built the mixed development for $300 million.

Hiap Hoe chief executive officer Teo Ho Beng said there are more travellers looking for accommodation in the area.

Knight Frank research head Png Poh Soon said the new development will drive more crowds to the usually quiet area, known more for its cultural heritage, such as the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall in Tai Gin Road.

He added that the hotels will benefit from being near medical facilities such as Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital and Novena Medical Centre.

“When medical tourism establishes itself in Singapore over time, the industry will play a bigger role in attracting visitors to that area. Medical tourists who do not want to stay in expensive hotels may consider the three- and four-star hotels there,” he said.

Mr Tony Cousens, general manager of Ramada and Days Hotels, said the hotels are aimed at customers looking for a good deal.

“Both hotels will provide value-conscious travellers the choice between two comfortable accomodations and all the conveniences of being part of an integrated development,” he said.

Days Hotel will officially open its doors on Dec 31, while Ramada hotel will be open in March.
