NLB to host International Summit of the Book in 2013

Singapore received the crystal book that represents the "torch" to host the next International Summit of the Book at a handover ceremony when the inaugural two-day conference, organised by the Library of Congress, came to a close yesterday in Washington, D.C.

It is intended that this event travels to different cultural capitals each year to discuss the importance of libraries and books in the preservation of cultural identities, and to promote thought leadership on the role and influence of books.

Come 16 August 2013, the National Library Board (NLB) of Singapore will host the second Summit, themed "A Book By Any Other Name", to discuss the future of the book.

"Singapore is a cultural hub for the region, an oasis of a rich array of information resources that is accessible to people from around the world," said Professor Tommy Koh, Singapore's Ambassador-At-Large and Chairman of the Organising Committee for the Summit in Singapore.

"Singapore is well-positioned as a place for thought leaders to convene and discuss the future of the book in the digital age, from an Asian perspective."

"Singapore looks forward to hosting the Second International Summit of the Book alongside the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) World Library and Information Congress 2013 which NLB is hosting from 17th to 23rd August," added Mrs Elaine Ng, Chief Executive Officer of NLB.

"These two platforms will give delegates from libraries around the world the opportunity to engage in a spirited exchange of ideas."

Singapore was invited to host and organise the Summit in 2013, in recognition of NLB's strong standing among both public libraries and national libraries worldwide.
