FUTSAL enthusiasts now have a new stomping ground in a purpose-built facility located under the Thomson flyover.

Called Offside, the futsal complex has four pitches, each laid with the artificial turf recommended by international football body Fifa.

Futsal is a five-a-side game based on soccer, played on a smaller pitch.

Offside sits on a plot that has been vacant since the Whitley Hawker Centre made way for a road-widening project some 20 years ago.

The Straits Times reported last year that the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) had put up a tender for a three-year lease on the plot of land, the first such space to be made available for interim use. The SLA said it would work with other government agencies to identify other plots for such interim use.

CWT Holdings, a local investment company, submitted the winning bid of $5,888 a month to develop a futsal complex. Its business development director Derek Cheong said CWT put in $500,000 to develop the complex and that demand for the pitches has been good so far.

He said: 'We've got bookings until June. We are seeing good demand from teenagers, expatriates and working professionals, who like our complex for its central location.'

Student Shyane Stephen , 16, said: 'I find the rates affordable. If I go with a few of my friends, we can split the cost.'

Offside charges $60 an hour from 3am to 6pm on weekdays and $90 an hour from 6pm to 3am daily and on weekends and public holidays.
