A day for volunteers

On International Volunteer Day, we shine the spotlight on two people who give back to society despite their own challenges in life.

Madam Doreen Ang had depression and stayed home for six years after losing her only child, a teenager, to a rare illness.

But now, the housewife is hardly home, spending her days and nights conducting qigong classes for free at community centres.

Mr Samy Palani, 62, may be in a wheelchair but the project executive is a first-aid volunteer.

And he has helped at events like Emergency Preparedness Day, National Day Parade and National Life Saving Day.

He said: “There are certain things I cannot do because of my disability, but I am still capable of helping others.”
