But Mr Benny Phang (above) still says life has been kind to him.

The son of a cook was in his early 20s when Singapore was invaded by the Japanese in 1942.

These days, the 93-year-old spends his golden years at the Henderson Senior Citizens' Home, honing his computer skills and keeping himself active.

The room he shares with a roommate is littered with a step-by-step guide on how to use the computer.

"It took me about three years, just reading books I borrowed from the library," said Mr Phang, gesturing to the laptop and printer that his children got for him.
