5 steps to taking the perfect selfie

Taking selfies have become the new trending thing to do these days. A selfie is a photo you take of yourself using a camera or smart phone which you upload onto a social media website.

Selfies are taken for many reasons – as a keepsake, for a new display picture on your social networking platform, or simply to flaunt your looks on Instagram.

Regardless of the reasons why you want to take a selfie, you will need to know the best way to capture a great photo of yourself. Here’s how:

1. Glam yourself up before the shot

Get yourself cleaned up and put on some decent clothes. Ladies, don’t forget to freshen up your face with a bit of mascara and lipstick. For the guys, remember to put some wax into your hair and sleek it up. Look into the mirror as many times as you need to check your appearance.

2. Use a decent camera or smartphone

Some photos may appear grainy, while other photos are in absolutely high resolution/definition. Those factors depend on the camera you are using. If you’re using a simple smartphone camera, don’t expect it to turn out as good as the photos taken by a point-and-shoot or DSLR camera. The better the camera, the better the photos you’ll take.

3. Lights, camera, selfie

Find a good spot with a sufficient amount of light to illuminate your face. You don’t want a place which is too dark or you won’t be able to see anything in the photo at all. Try positioning yourself in front of a natural light source, like a window… Or simply turn on the flash of your camera.

4. Hold your pose and smile

When taking a selfie, it gets pretty tricky to smile, strike a pose, and get a good lighting and keeping still all at the same time as you worry over trying to look good. Photo turned out blurry? Remember to keep still and hold the camera steady.

If you prefer having the camera away from your face, why not get a monopod? They’re especially great when taking selfies with friends or when you’re taking beautiful sceneries behind you. You can also use a tripod to place your camera and put it on timer as you pose.

5. Edit your photos

Make your photos stand out by editing them with filters, stickers and text to make them stand out. You can do this easily by downloading certain mobile apps.

Now that you’re ready for your perfect selfie, start snapping away! Even if your first selfie does not turn out the way you wanted, you should keep trying till you get one you’re satisfied with. The fun part about it is you get to keep taking as many photos as you want so you’ll have plenty to choose from. Remember to share them with STClassifieds on Instagram! (Follow us @STClassifiedssg)
