Just as you can whip up beauty remedies for your face with food from the kitchen, you can do the same for your hair. These are some of the common kitchen items you can use to clean and nourish your hair and scalp.

Baking soda: A few spoonfuls of baking soda added to your shampoo once a week will remove the build-up of styling products in your hair.

Apple cider vinegar: Use this to help remove excess product build-up, and make hair smoother, shinier and easier to manage. Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into one cup of warm water. Pour this mixture over freshly shampooed hair.

Mayonnaise: This makes a great hair conditioner as it contains oil and eggs. Apply mayonnaise to dry hair and leave on for at least 20 minutes or overnight. Rinse and shampoo with cold water.

Egg: Beat an egg and massage it into freshly washed hair. After five minutes, rinse it out with cool water. Don’t use hot water, or you’ll cook the egg in your hair!

Beer: This beverage can add an attractive sheen to hair. Pour a can of beer over your hair, then rinse it out with water.

Lemon: The juice can be used as a natural conditioner and to impart natural shine to hair. Use it in your last rinse after shampooing hair, but don’t wash it out.

Avocado: Mash this fruit and massage it into freshly shampooed hair for a great conditioner. Leave on for 15 minutes before rinsing.

Olive oil: Warm up half a cup of olive oil and massage it through the hair, especially the ends, as a conditioning treatment for dry hair. Wrap up your hair in a shower cap, followed by a warm towel for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse as usual.

Honey: If you have frizzy hair, make your own after-shampoo rinse by mixing one tablespoon of honey with a litre of water. Use it after every hair wash.
