Makeover magic - Make-up

The average woman doesn’t have an army of stylists, make-up artists and hairdressers to ensure that she looks perfect on every occasion. But that doesn’t mean she can’t look like a million bucks. Take a closer look at style icons like the late Princess Diana or Audrey Hepburn, and you may be able to learn a thing or two on how to bring out the best in you through the right make-up, hair, clothes and accessories.

Here are some make-up tips you can try.

Choose the right foundation. Your foundation should match your natural skin tone exactly. The formula should be suited to your skin type. With the right shade, the foundation will seem to disappear right into your skin.

Dab on concealer. Use concealer only where it’s needed, over spots like blemishes and under-eye circles. Choose a shade lighter than your foundation and use sparingly.

Dust on some loose powder. Apply translucent powder with a large, soft powder brush all over the face to set the foundation. Remove excess powder with the same brush or a powder puff.

Shape your eyebrows. Shape unruly brows by tweezing out stray strands regularly. If you have sparse brows, fill them in with an eyebrow powder or pencil in a matching colour using light, feathery strokes.

Apply some blusher. Smile to locate the apples of your cheeks, as this should be the area to apply blusher. Start with a little bit of colour and build up gradually. Invest in a purpose-made blusher brush for better results.

Define your eyes with eyeliner. Draw a thin line along the lash line on the upper eyelid. Avoid lining under your eyes as it may cause you to look tired instead.

Add colour with eye shadow. Choose a maximum of three colours in light, medium and dark shades. The darkest shade is for lining the upper eyelid or highlighting the outer corners while lighter colours can be applied on the entire lid or under the brow bone.

Apply mascara. Curl your lashes first. Apply mascara by moving the brush from the lash line to the tip of your lashes. Allow the first coat of mascara to dry before putting on a second coat.

Finish off with lipstick. Apply a thin layer of lip balm if your lips are dry. A lip brush will help to spread the colour more evenly and define the lip line.
