Makeover magic - Clothes

Ever wondered why some women seem to look good in any piece of clothing, despite not having the figures of fashion models? Chances are, such women happen to know how to choose outfits that make them look good, based on design, cut, colour and fabric.

If you want to score more sartorial hits than misses, don’t confuse fashion with style. Being “fashionable” is more about following the latest seasonal trends dictated by the fashion capitals. On the other hand, having “style” is more about being aware of what flatters you and what doesn’t. You wear the outfit, rather than letting the outfit overwhelm you.

Being well-dressed is also not about how much you can afford to spend, but spending it on the right clothing. It’s perfectly fine to check out the latest fashion trends – you might even find certain pieces that look good on you and work well with your existing wardrobe. But the woman with “style” won’t buy a dress in the latest design if it doesn’t suit her.

While it’s hard to pinpoint what it takes to be stylish, some basic guidelines can help you ensure that you don’t end up with a wardrobe full of clothes, but nothing to wear. Even if you’re not concerned with keeping up with trends, edit the contents of your wardrobe periodically to keep them relevant.

First, weed out pieces that you have not worn for the past six months or longer. Consider each item. If it no longer fits and cannot be altered, ditch it. Bought an outfit in a colour that makes you look sallow and ill? Get rid of it. Next, group the remaining outfits by type and colour. This way, you can tell at a glance what you’re lacking and what you have in excess.

It’s important get the right fit when trying on new clothes. The garment shouldn’t pucker and show any unwanted bulges or gaping holes. Either get it in another size, or try another brand. The measurements for the same size may differ between brands, especially Asian versus Western labels.
