Louis Vuitton tells tales of The Trunk in new book

What's in a luggage trunk? Plenty, it would seem; especially when a trunk has its hidden compartments.

This, Gaston-Louis Vuitton knew all too well. The grandson of Louis Vuitton not only inherited the family-run trunk making trade but also a lifelong fascination with luxury luggage.

Now, his journal entries and more Louis Vuitton archives serve as the inspiration for 11 French writers in The Trunk, Louis Vuitton's first short story anthology.

In stores here from April 2013, these stories retell true-to-life incidents in an artful blend of fact and fiction. From a real-life murder case, an ambassador's last words to the theft of the Mona Lisa, these writers uncover the secrets within luggage cases that made the news.

Have a taste for fantastical feats? See "The Fabulous Story of Houdini" by David Foenkinos.

Back in 1905, the trunkmaker dared the famed magician to escape from a Louis Vuitton luggage box that was to be "nailed shut" by the Louis Vuitton team. Inspired by this episode, the bestselling author of Delicacy imagines what Houdini would have done, if he had taken up Louis Vuitton's challenge.

Literary buffs among you will be intrigued by the chapter on Ernest Hemingway. As retold in this volume by Nicolas D'Estienne D'Orves, the manuscript of the author's last work, A Moveable Feast, was found in a forgotten Louis Vuitton trunk.

Read Virginie Despentes' tale on "The Sinister Story of a Corpse in a Trunk", if you've a hankering for a classic crime thriller.

Else reach out to your soft spot with & Eliette Abecassis' chapter on "The World's Most Expensive Teddy Bear", inspired by a Korean collector's Louis Vuitton teddy purchase.

So let this Louis Vuitton anthology serve as an introduction to these contemporary French writers. The illustrated leather-bound edition will be a handsome addition to your bookshelf too.
