Lots of strapless, where's the bling?

What stars wore...and shouldn't have worn at the Golden Globe Awards

Lots of strapless, where's the bling? Charlize Theron is the belle of the ball in Dior haute couture and a Cartier head band.

At the first red carpet outing of awards season, the stars were surprisingly subdued with their fashion choices.

Pale colours failed to light up the red carpet and simple, boring strapless gowns were aplenty. There was also a surprising lack of bling as compared to previous years. Necks and ears went mostly unadorned and when they did sparkle, it was only very discreetly. Perhaps not to flaunt too much in bad times, stars went with simple and subtle pieces such as Freida Pinto's 145-carat yellow diamond Chopard choker and Julianne Moore's diamond and emerald Fred Leighton tassle earrings.

At times, the look was austere, such as Kate Winslet and Claire Danes' black-and-white gowns, and Rooney Mara in a stark black Nina Ricci gown.

Even Angelina Jolie, in spite of wearing a striking Versace ivory gown with a red detail at the neckline, looked too austere.

And then there were those who went overboard with the frou frou - Modern Family's Julie Bowden in a too-girly pink Reem Acra gown and Elle Macpherson in what looked like Zac Posen wedding gown.

The winners on the red carpet were those who know what works for them, and did not fall victim to fashion trends or misguided stylists.
