Look simply brilliant!

Accessorising your outfit with a piece of beautifully designed jewellery is an excellent way of perking up your looks, or adding a touch of glamour for a night out.

Jewellery may cost more than a pretty penny, but with proper care, your precious collection will continue to sparkle and draw admiring looks for many years to come.

Here’s how to maintain the shine in your accessories:

  • Even if jewellery like gold and platinum do not tarnish, they can lose their brilliance over time, as they become coated with residues from our bodily secretions like sebum and sweat, and the ingredients in the lotions, soaps, scents and powder that we apply on ourselves. The ingredients in cleaning products, such as alcohol, chlorine, ammonia and abrasive compounds, can also discolour or damage jewellery mountings. So always apply make-up, perfumes or oils before you put on your jewellery, and avoid wearing jewellery while doing household chores.

  • For regular use, soaps and polishing cloth specially made for cleaning jewellery are the most convenient. It would be ideal to have a separate polishing cloth for gold and silver items. To clean lightly-soiled jewellery, soak it in a soapy solution for a few minutes, rinse and pat dry. Use a soft brush to gently clean intricate filigree designs and stones.

  • If you have a sizeable collection of gold, diamond and other types of jewellery, a sonic wave machine would be useful. Such appliances are available in small, compact units that are suitable for home use. The cleaning process involves the use of sonic wave action and an appropriate liquid cleaner.

  • Liquid cleaners are available for every type of jewellery, including gold, silver, diamonds, pearls and other gemstones. These usually come in small jars. Some are packaged with a little basket to hold jewellery pieces that are to be soaked in the liquid, and some even come with a soft brush for cleaning heavily-soiled areas.

Here’s how to maintain the shine in your accessories:

  • Always dry jewellery thoroughly and rub it with a polishing cloth before putting it away.

  • Store your jewellery properly. To prevent the pieces from getting scratched, keep them in separate compartments of a jewellery case or in soft pouches, instead of piling them randomly in a heap.

  • To straighten out silver chains that have become all knotted up, dust them with a little talcum powder before trying to undo the knots. For stubborn knots, place a small drop of baby oil on a sheet of wax paper, lay the knotted portion in the oil and gently prise it apart with two pins, and then clean the chain thoroughly.

  • Check the stone settings of your jewellery periodically for damage to the gold prongs or bezels.
