Hooked on good deals

Everyone loves a value-for-money deal. Bagging a good bargain, however, takes patience (the long wait for a clearance sale), knowledge (where the best finds are) and skills (how to beat others to a worthwhile buy).

But before you go charging out on your hunting mission, pick out a pointer for two on how to effectively get your hands on what you want. You'll need these tips to see you through a smooth-sailing shopping or feasting spree!

  • Before hitting the shops, equip yourself with information on their operating hours. Do they open till late? Are they closed on certain days? You don't want to make a wasted trip! Also find out about their transaction facilities. For example, it is common for vendors at warehouse sales to demand cash payments.

  • Plot your shopping in advance, jotting down what you need and where you can obtain it. Try to take a linear or one-direction route instead of going round and round in circles or zig-zags, so that you don't lose precious time backtracking.

  • If you intend to dine at a popular restaurant, especially during weekends, be sure to call way in advance to make a booking. Remember to enquire if the eatery has baby chairs should you have tots in tow.

  • Bring along a calculator if you wish to be precise with your budgeting. You can use some smart widgets to help you work out GST figures, service charges and discounted prices, and even split the cost amongst friends after a meal with minimum fuss and hassle
