Half of S’poreans hit by knee problems

About 50 per cent of Singaporeans have been or are affected by chronic knee pain. Of these, about half visited the doctor, and even then, they waited 13 months before seeking treatment.

These findings were revealed in a survey done by health-care company Sanofi to mark World Arthritis Day last Friday.

Knee osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is a degenerative disease of the knee joint. The joint cartilage that cushions the bones and allows the knee to move and bend wears away.

When bones rub against each other, it causes inflammation, resulting in pain and swelling in the joints.
