Dressy flats for formal events? Gold-trimmed black leather sandals from Giuseppe Zanotti.

Can you recommend flat sandals that are dressy enough for a formal occasion, such as a wedding dinner?

By definition, sandals usually leave your toes exposed, and those that come without heels are best reserved for casual outings. For formal occasions, I would highly recommend wearing heels.

Or you can opt for dressy flats, which are closed-toe and look more presentable without compromising on comfort.

Stuart Weitzman's Stringtip ballet shoes ($530, from 02-12E Takashimaya Shopping Centre) feature lace detail as well as a patent leather toe cap that strike a good balance between feminine and edgy.

If you insist on wearing flat sandals, look for those that are bejewelled or sport interesting details to dress up their casual vibe. Giuseppe Zanotti stocks a few designs that may be smart enough for such formal occasions. For instance, its gold-trimmed black leather sandals ($2,850, above, from 02-04 Ion Orchard) look classy when paired with a long column dress.

Tie your hair in a sleek ponytail and slip on some gold accessories for a look that is effortless yet glamorous. Or check out Kenneth Cole Reaction's range at Her Glass Slipper, 02-26 Chevron House. This pair of nude Screen Gems Natural sandals ($189, right), for example, is embellished with colourful stones, making it polished enough for a wedding.

Another chic option is Jimmy Choo's rose-gold gladiator sandals ($450, from B1-118 The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands). The glossy patent leather adds a touch of glamour and the espadrille-style soles offer comfort through the night.

When choosing a matching dress, go for a simple design in a fabric with a slight sheen, such as satin or silk. This will keep your look luxe and elegant. Try this sky blue draped silk-chiffon gown from American label Tibi (£699.96 or S$1,364, right, from; or go for Topshop's Clean T-shirt maxi dress made from satin ($219, below right, from 01-05 Knightsbridge).

A final point to note: If you are flashing your toes at a formal event, don't forget that pedicure.
