Can’t take my eyes off you...

If you have beautiful eyes, they will be the first things people notice about you. But the presence of shadows, dark circles and puffiness will draw just as much (unwanted) attention too!

Compared to the skin in other parts of the face, the skin around the eyes is thinner and less capable of generating collagen. As we age, the skin in this area will become thinner; and as the skin thins, the veins underneath become more visible.  Other factors that contribute to dark circles and puffiness include excessive intake of caffeinated beverages, stress, lack of sleep, nutrient deficiencies, overexposure to the sun and smoking.

Let’s look at these common beauty problems and ways to resolve them:

Crows’ feet

Remember that the skin surrounding your eyes is very delicate. Rubbing, scrubbing and stretching it will eventually result in the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

To avoid squinting, protect your eyes from the sun’s glare by wearing a pair of good-quality sunglasses to filter out harmful UV rays. Protect the skin by using eye creams daily with SPF15 or higher.

When applying any beauty product around your eyes, always use your ring finger, which exerts the least pressure. Sweep your finger lightly from your temple to your nose to gently massage the product into your skin, then gently pat the area with the same finger to increase absorption.

When you remove eye make up, be gentle. Use products that are formulated specifically for use around the eyes.

Dark circles

The best way to prevent or eliminate dark circles is to get enough sleep each night.

To brighten dark circles instantly, use a concealer or eye cream with light-reflecting pigments, or cover up with a concealer in a shade that blends naturally with your skin. You might also try going one shade lighter than your foundation.

A natural way of eliminating dark circles is to crush a cucumber, wrap it in thin, transparent cloth and place on the eyes for 10 to 15 minutes. Do this twice a week as part of your beauty routine.

Dull and tired eyes

There’s nothing more beautiful than eyes that are luminous and sparkling with health.

Enhance the natural beauty of your eyes by taking good care of them,

Like other parts of your body, your eyes need essential nutrients to function properly, stay healthy and look their most attractive. Avoid eating salty foods as these cause water retention and can result in the skin around the eyes becoming bloated and puffy.

After a hard day at school or work, lie down and close your eyes, or apply a cold compress to them. Another way to revitalise tired eyes is to place your elbows on the table and close your eyes with your palms gently pressed against them. Allow the weight of your head to fall on the palm.

Don’t be short-sighted about beauty!

Don’t let vanity stop you from using spectacles to correct weak eyesight. Not using the right eyewear will only worsen your eyesight further. You can look just as attractive or even stylish by selecting spectacles with trendy frames that complement your face.
