THE start-up time was 6.40am yesterday but that did not deter 500 women from sacrificing sleep to take part in a mass yoga workout.

Shape Yoga by the Sea 2012, Singapore's largest women-only outdoor yoga event, was held at Dalbergia Green in East Coast Park.

Organised by Shape Singapore, a title published by SPH Magazines, the event is in its third edition.

Instructors from Pure Yoga led the participants through stretches and poses during the 75-minute workout.

Participants were then treated to a yoga demonstration by the instructors. They also took home a goodie bag worth more than $400 each.

Fringe activities included a lucky draw with prizes such as Pure Yoga memberships and Origins beauty hampers worth over $6,000.

Ms Li Yuling, editor of Shape, said: "As Singapore's leading wellness magazine, Shape is pleased to offer... readers and the public more opportunities to get moving together. Yoga is a low-impact activity that can benefit women of all ages and fitness levels.

"With our series of outdoor mass yoga workouts, we hope to encourage more women to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle. Shape Yoga in the City as well as Shape Yoga by the Sea are fun events that every woman can take part in with her girlfriends," she added.

Registration for the yoga workout opened on Aug 31 but closed on Sept 7 due to overwhelming response.

Ms Diana Lee, general manager for fashion and beauty at SPH Magazines, said: "We are proud to be at the forefront of the women's fitness movement in Singapore. The response to our mass yoga events has been tremendous and that's why we're having not one but two sessions this year to meet the demand."

Shape Yoga in the City was held at Dhoby Ghaut Green in April.
