5 Ways To Protect Yourself Against Haze

If things have been looking foggy over the past 2 days, it’s not your eyesight. The haze is back in Singapore and we’re feeling its effects on our body. Here are 5 easy steps that everyone can take to guard against the harmful particles in the air.

Minimise outdoor activities

While we can’t escape from the haze (unless we leave the country), we can minimise our exposure to it.

According to the NEA website, persons with existing heart or respiratory ailments should reduce physical exertion and outdoor activity to stay indoors as much as possible.

Engaging in strenuous activities outdoors, such as jogging causes you to inhale the pollutants in the air deep into your lungs (urgh!). Unless you have self a pair of self-cleansing mechanical lungs, we strongly advise against it.

Stay indoors

Keep doors, windows and any other ventilation outlets shut when you are indoors at all times. If you have an air-conditioner at home, turn it on and ensure that the filters are clean. Also, do invest in anair purifier to step up your anti-haze efforts. These portable devices help to keep the particulate levels of an enclosed space low.

For more organic choices, opt for houseplants such as the common Chinese Evergreen and Snake Plant which help absorb toxic pollutants. Other than decreasing the particulate levels, the splash of green adds aesthetic value to your house too!

Wear a mask

And not just any paper or surgical masks. Those are simply a waste of time when it comes to filering out harmful air particles. Respiratory masks such as the N95 masks are more effective in keeping out fine particulate matter. NEA also advises the masks to be changed when they become soiled or distorted. These respiratory masks can be obtained from commercial pharmacies as well as SingHealth/NHG polyclinics.

Boost your immune system

It’s time to listen to what your Mother always say: eat your greens and fruits. A healthy diet is important at all times, but in hazy days, it’s a definite must. Eliminate cases of runny nose and coughs by upping your intake of Vitamin C and Vitamin E through superfoods such as green leafy vegetables, avocados, apples, tuna, sardines etc. Drink more water than you usually would to aid the kidneys in flushing out toxins absorbed through the lungs and skin.

Try to cut down on alcohol and coffee intake as theses beverages promote fluid loss and causes the body to lose nutrients more quickly. In addition, if you’re already going through the symptoms of excess mucus production, water will also help dilute the mucus and move them along more easily

Consult a doctor immediately if unwell

If you are experiencing shortness of breaths, coughs, runny noses or dry eyes, do seek medical advice from a doctor. Particularly for people who have existing breathing (e.g. Asthma) or skin (e.g. Eczema) conditions, it is more important than ever to monitor your health and reduce outdoor activities as much as possible. For a list of clinics near you, check out our directory page.

According to NEA, the haze will most likely persist over the next few days. We hope that these tips will help make the situation a bit more bearable for everyone. Also, we’ve put together a cluster of items for haze fighting-some of these include air purifiers, humidifiers, eye drops and the highly demanded N95 masks! In the meantime, take care of your health!
