Spring cleaning - The big clean up

Now that you’ve gotten rid of all the clutter, it’s time to get down to the actual cleaning. To clean in the shortest time possible and with the least effort, think and work like a pro. The trick is to arm yourself with the basic cleaning supplies and tools and use more efficient techniques.

You can follow the example of professional cleaners like housekeepers or hotel chambermaids. First, they cart around everything they need in one trolley. Likewise, you can put all your cleaning aids and tools in a pail or caddy and tote it along as you move from room to room.

Professional cleaners simplify matters by using products that can multitask, such as a glass or multi-surface cleaner, a heavy-duty degreasing cleaner, a floor cleaner and an abrasive cleaner. Other tools you’ll require are a broom, dustpan, mop, brushes, rags and trash bags.

Industry experts recommend taking a top-down approach to any cleaning job. That means starting with the ceiling and working your way down to the floor. The logic behind it is simple – dust and dirt fall to the floor as you clean, so reserve sweeping and mopping the floor as the final tasks.

Another method to emulate is to take an organised approach and work in a systematic way. Clean a room in a circular direction to reduce the chance of missing an area. For example, when cleaning the toilet, you should tackle every aspect of the vanity top before moving on to the toilet bowl or shower stall.

You can also save time by taking the “clean smart, not harder” approach. If only one spot in a particular area is dirty, concentrate your effort there and do a light “touch up” for the rest of the area.
