Nike's LunarGlide 6 shoes are designed for runners with flat feet or those who need extra stability.
Runners with flat feet tend to overpronate, that is, their feet roll inward excessively, forcing the knees and ankles to work harder to stabilise the body.
Overpronators tend to push off from the big toe and second toe, so they should wear running shoes with more cushioning on the inside of the heel and under the ball of the foot, around the big toe.
The LunarGlide 6 features a dual-density midsole with firm Phylon foam on the medial side for stability during impact, and soft Lunarlon foam on the lateral side, for a more cushioned transition.
On its carbon rubber outsole is a pattern resembling a colourful topographical map, which supplies extra traction and stability.
The shoe's upper uses a specially engineered foam package with strategically placed perforations to conform to the shape of your foot. An ultra-thin mesh over the foam increases its breathability.
Nike's Flywire cables are used to wrap the mid-foot for a better fit and feel. In addition, the heel counter has a plastic heel clip with more foam on the medial side for extra support.
The review pair had a greenish-blue (Hyper Jade, according to Nike) upper, with midsole and outsole in luminous yellow.
Although I am a neutral runner, I always love having extra support because of my injury-prone ankles. So I was quite pleased with the extra heel support when I first slipped on the shoes. But they felt a bit tight when I wore them with socks.
On my first run, the support felt a bit overwhelming. My feet were aching by the end of a mere 3 km.
Subsequently, I ditched the socks and on my regular 5km runs, I felt totally at home in the LunarGlide 6. My feet did not ache at all.
My toes had enough space to wiggle, without shifting vigorously during the gait cycle. The rebound on toe-off was impressive, while the cushioning on impact was evident. My ankles felt well supported, too.
The only downer is that my feet felt much too warm after a run or when I walked the shopping malls for hours in these shoes.
- The Nike LunarGlide 6 is a great pair of running shoes for people with flat feet, and a good trainer for neutral runners.
