IF YOU are out with friends and wondering where to go for dinner or if you are at a loss as to what to do on the weekend, you can now turn to a new free application on your smartphone.

The app called ST Happenings! will feature at least 100 activities you can do on the weekend and in the weeks ahead. They are culled from the pages of food, entertainment and arts listings published in the Life!Weekend section of The Straits Times every Friday.

The app will also include critics' picks, which are recommendations from the beat writers for movies, music, food and the arts in Life!, including film correspondent John Lui and veteran food critic Wong Ah Yoke.

Straits Times editor Warren Fernandez said: "This is another way to give readers content they want as and when they want it. With this app, you need never be at a loss over what to do during the weekend again."

The app took eight months toconceptualise and develop. Ms Fitri Farina, 23, a systems specialist in charge of the project, said: "Usually, people trawl the Internet for ideas on where to go and how to spend their week. So we decided to take the content from the Life! listings and put it in an app, and added features so it would be an interactive experience."

For the full interactive experience, users can sign in to ST Happenings! with their Facebook accounts. They can "like" an event, share it on their Facebook Timeline and invite others to join them for the event. Users can also add an event to their calendar.

A partnership with restaurant reservation app Chope Reservations will enable users to reserve a table at some of the restaurants featured.

One neat feature of the app, called Nearby, allows users to search for events and restaurants that are close to their location.

Clubbers can turn to another feature that is dedicated solely to the clubbing scene. On Club Seen, users can find out about clubbing events and share pictures of themselves partying.

The app is available to iPhone and iPad users. Ms Y.F. Lee, an office administrator, likes the idea of calling up information on happenings around town on her mobile phone wherever she is.

She said: "I think it will be very convenient for people like me who read the news on my iPhone."

To celebrate the launch of the app, ST Happenings! is giving away 10 pairs of front-row tickets and five pairs of mosh-pit tickets to K-pop band Shinee's concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Dec 8. Each pair of tickets is worth $476.
