The LifeProof iPhone case claims to protect your iPhone 4 or 4S against all manner of dirt, water and gunk - without the bulk.

And, as it turns out, that is no empty boast. Waterproof cases are usually bulky and heavy, but this case is not much larger than an average silicone iPhone case.

Weighing 28g, it does not add much heft either.

The case comes in two pieces - a front shell with a built-in screen protector and a back cover.

I found the installation process easy - the phone was placed into the front shell and sealed with the back cover. However, the case came across as rather flimsy when I was handling it. Peeling open the back cover of the case made me feel as though I was opening the lid of a plastic container.

Its makers claim that this case is made according to military-grade specifications. If so, it appears they were inspired by the crudeness of a makeshift bomb shelter.

This case's very plasticky built-in screen protector and the overall clunky look will not endear it to users wanting a classy appearance.

While it may not be the most elegant looking iPhone case, it certainly does its job well.

Waterproof? Check. I was able to submerge it in the kitchen sink, iPhone and all, while listening to music through the case's special waterproof earphone jack.

Dustproof? Check. I sprinkled some white flour onto it, including the seams, and nothing got in.

Shockproof? Check. I dropped the case from a tabletop, sans iPhone. The case suffered some minor scratches but was otherwise none the worse for the drop.

At more than $100, this case is a pretty expensive investment, but a worthwhile one if you are looking for something to protect your iPhone 4 or 4S well. Just do not take it to a formal event.
