Google reported brisk sales of its controversial Internet-linked Glass eyewear, with all units sold out on the first day the US$1,500 (S$1,900) gadget was made available to the public in the United States.

"We're out of spots in the Explorer Programme for now, but may have more to share soon," the Google Glass team wrote on its website yesterday.

The Internet giant announced last week that it would take orders for the first time from any US citizen above the age of 18, starting on Tuesday for a limited period.

Prior to this, only a few thousand "explorers" had been invited to give the Glass prototype a try.

On Tuesday, within hours after the online sales began, the Glass team said it had run out of Cotton, or the white model.

Soon after the other models Charcoal, Tangerine, Shale (grey) and Sky (blue) also appeared to be sold out when the team wrote on its site: "That's all, folks."

The wearable gadget is not available in Singapore yet but some US firms have offered to ship the device over to interested parties.

Separately, Google also has a patent pending for its smart contact lenses, which come with built-in micro-cameras.
