Chance for readers to win Galaxy S4
By Sherwin Loh

CONSUMERS in Singapore will be among the first in the world to get the new Samsung Galaxy S4 when it goes on sale on April 27, but 30 lucky readers of The Straits Times will walk away with the Android smartphone even earlier than that.

Samsung Asia, together with The Straits Times, will be inviting 60 readers to a Straits Times Appreciates Readers (Star) event next week where they will get to try out the new phone.

Half of them will go home with a Samsung Galaxy S4 phone, to be given out in a lucky draw at the event. The remaining 30 will each receive a $100 Samsung accessory voucher.

Samsung will only launch the 16GB LTE, or 4G, version in Singapore. Priced at $998, the phone sports a 4.99-inch screen and a 13-megapixel camera, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.9GHz quad core processor.

Other versions elsewhere include the 32GB and 64GB models, as well as another that runs Samsung's own Exynos 5 Octa eight core processor at either 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz.

Packed with motion control features that let users pick up calls or skip songs by moving a palm over the screen, the phone also has an eye tracking feature that lets users scroll up and down webpages by tilting their heads up and down.

It is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S III, which has sold more than 50 million units globally. A leader in the Android smartphone space, Samsung is the top-selling Android phone maker in Singapore.

Mr Warren Fernandez, editor of The Straits Times, said: "These days, many people get their news updates from The Straits Times on the go, on their smartphones.

"Many people are also keen to check out the latest cool gadgets. This is a way for us to give our readers a chance to get their hands on one of these phones."

Mr Harry Lee, managing director of Samsung Asia, said: "Samsung is honoured to partner The Straits Times, one of the most established titles in Singapore, for this meaningful event which rewards readers and consumers.

"We are excited that they are among the first few in Singapore to experience the innovative features of the Galaxy S4 With LTE, and look forward to working with The Straits Times for future collaborations."

The lucky 60 Straits Times readers who are selected will be given details of the Star event via e-mail. To take part, readers simply have to send their full name, NRIC number, mobile number and e-mail address to, with the subject "The Straits Times/Samsung Galaxy S4". The closing date is April 23, 11.59pm.
