A SINGLE security camera that can do the job of eight and an intelligent system for managing keys and valuables - these were just two of the technologies that won Merlion Awards at the Safety and Security Asia Conference 2013 yesterday.

The Mobotix S14D Flexmount received special mention in the gold award category. It is the world's first double-hemispheric camera that allows users to keep two rooms under surveillance with a single camera.

The six-megapixel camera has two golf-ball-sized sensors, which can be placed in separate rooms.

The hemispheric view allows each sensor to replace four cameras conventionally placed in the corners of a room.

"Its ability to secure two spaces with one camera is commendable," director of the Security Industry Institute Jeffrey Seah said.

Hotels and retailers have already expressed interest in this $2,800 camera, said the executive director of Spiraltech, Mr Michael Tan, whose firm distributes the system.

Seven out of 68 entries won gold and silver honours at the Merlion Awards ceremony, which recognises innovative security technologies.

Entries were judged by local security experts.

The proxSafe system was one of those that took silver.

This digitally programmed key rack allows users to know when keys are checked out and by whom, replacing handwritten inventories prone to human error.

The technology, which can be programmed for biometric security, is already in use in banks, casinos and ministries.
