4 ways to clean your laptop

Laptops are commonly used over desktop PCs mainly because they can be carried around with ease. This provides the opportunity for users to bring it anywhere they go. Because people tend to bring laptops around to work or even to lunch, they may end up getting dirty and full of germs.

Here are 4 steps to get your laptop sparkling clean again:

Note: Remember to turn off the laptop and remove any power cords before you get started.

1. If you have a smudged screen

Moisten a piece of cloth (preferably lint-free) and apply either a specialised screen cleaning solution, wet wipes, sprays or just water to it. Be careful not to not to soak the cloth or have it too drenched. Carefully wipe your laptop screen to remove dirt without pressing on to the screen too hard. Any liquid residue should be wiped away with an additional dry cloth.

2. If your keyboard is dirty

Dust off food pieces stuck in the keyboard using a duster or an unused toothbrush. If the particles are too small, you can blow onto the keyboard to make the dust fly away. You can also use canned air to clear the keyboard of any debris using short gentle bursts.

To get rid of stickiness, get a damp cloth and wipe the tops of the keypad lightly. Avoid pressing too hard as it may damage the keys. Make sure the cloth isn’t too wet either as it could spoil the internal components if water seeps through the keys.

3. If you want a glossy exterior

Wipe the laptop exterior with a damp cloth. You can use rubbing alcohol to remove grime and stains, but remember to check your laptop’s manual to ensure that doing this will not damage your laptop. Get another cloth to dry the laptop thoroughly.

4. Prevention is better than cure

The purpose of having a laptop is to be able to bring it everywhere you go. However, it is best to avoid certain activities as you are using your laptop. For instance, eating close to your laptop will accumulate crumbs on the keyboard. Having a drink next to your laptop may result in a spill. Smoking, while using your laptop, can result in a murky display as the smoke builds up in the screen.

For further prevention, you can get a screen protector for an anti-smudge and anti-glare screen, a keyboard protector for easy cleaning and a laptop cover to prevent any scratches and dirt on it.

Taking precautions when handling your laptop can keep it clean and running smoothly for a longer period of time. Try your best to clean your laptop on a regular basis, such as once a week. Taking care of your laptop can help to ensure that it is performing at its best!
