Not only does she say there is no understanding of what makes a global phenomenon like the Korean rapper's song, she also prefers slow and steady growth of her fanbase.

Over the telephone from California, the 20-year-old says: "I don't know about having a viral hit like that. That's the kind of video that kind of sticks and goes viral.

"I'd love to try to come up with something that is viral but at the same time, I'm more about trying to get a steady growth. I'm not looking for instant overnight success."

Before you think she is bitter, she goes on to explain that videos like Gangnam Style "are just really really out there and it's because they are so unique or different or funny, it's just one of those things where you cross the fingers and hope you get lucky".

But as a reminder, she adds that "there's no magical formula for getting a viral video".

Alvord, who has more than a million subscribers to her YouTube channel and has released two albums, My Dream (2011) and My Heart Is (2012)
