When plastic surgery becomes reality TV

At some point in modern history, plastic surgery was considered a necessity when it involved victims of accidents or unfortunate circumstances.

Then, it evolved into a vanity issue where beauty could be constructed, and was not something you were born with.

Now, we have the extreme of where it is such a norm, it has become worthy of an American reality television programme.

Fox TV created a show called 'The Swan' where women who were judged to be ugly were given extreme makeovers that included several forms of plastic surgery.

Together with a panel of specialists, each contestant was designed a process of transformation.

Eventually, contestants were picked over a series of weeks to take part in the ultimate competition, a beauty pageant, where the winner was deemed 'The Swan'.

The title of the show plays on the fairy tale 'The Ugly Duckling' except these women do not mature into beauties, they are, in a way, artificially made.

Another plastic surgery favourite is Lisa Hochstein, star of the reality television series, 'Real Housewives of Miami'.

In the Bravo TV series, Lisa describes herself as her plastic surgeon husband's, Dr Lenny Hochstein, best creation.

She readily admitted to having rhinoplasty and two breast implantations.

Have a look through the gallery to see these various plastic surgery 'achievements'.
