Underwater World slashes prices

LESS than a week after the opening of another aquarium in Sentosa, Underwater World has cut its ticket prices to 1990s levels to attract more visitors.

For the whole of next month, it will sell adult tickets at $15.

The promotion, which is for Singapore residents only, also provides free entry to a child accompanied by a paying adult.

Instead of paying a total of $43.50 for an adult and a child to visit Underwater World, it will cost only $15 next month.

The promotion was announced on Tuesday, just days after Resorts World Sentosa opened its Marine Life Park last Thursday. The Marine Life Park is made up of the world's largest oceanarium and a water park.

Regular ticket prices at the two oceanariums are comparable - $29 for the one at Marine Life Park and $25.90 for Underwater World.

With more on offer at Marine Life Park at similar prices, travel agents said it would be difficult for Underwater World to hold its own against the newer and much bigger attraction.

They had suggested that Underwater World lower its prices to remain attractive to visitors.

An Underwater World spokesman said that the discount is part of its practice to offer promotions during the June and December school holidays. However, travel agents noted that previous promotions were not as attractive.

For example, in June, Underwater World brought in the zebra horn shark but there were no discounts.

CTC Travel's senior vice-president for marketing and public relations Alicia Seah said competing with Marine Life Park is not sustainable. "Underwater World should also consider tie-ups with hotels on the island or invest in new facilities or exhibits."

Currently, Sentosa visitors can pay a package price of $47.80 to go to Underwater World, Butterfly Park, Insect Kingdom and Tiger Sky Tower and enjoy a 10-minute foot spa at Fish Reflexology.
