EVEN as the revamped Safra Toa Payoh celebrated its official opening yesterday, excitement has also been whipped up over what users can expect at an upcoming facility - Safra Punggol.

In details given yesterday, the $50 million recreational club for national servicemen - expected to be ready by 2016 - will boast a waterfront promenade, an outdoor waterplay area and a seafood restaurant on a 1ha plot of land near Punggol MRT station.

It will cater to the lifestyle needs of a large number of young NSmen and their families in the north of Singapore, said Safra.

In a speech at last night's official opening of Safra Toa Payoh, guest of honour, President Tony Tan Keng Yam, said Safra has a "unique mission that distinguishes it from all other social clubs. That is, to foster camaraderie among our NSmen and to recognise their valuable contributions to the defence of Singapore".

Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen and Acting Minister for Social and Family Development Chan Chun Sing were among the guests.

The $52 million Safra Toa Payoh, now three times bigger, has drawn an average of 100,000 people a month since it opened last October. It is the largest of all the Safra clubs here. The others are in Jurong, Tampines, Yishun Country Club and Mount Faber.

Safra also said that eligible Singapore Armed Forces NSmen will get $50 to $100 worth of NS45 Safra vouchers within the next three months. They can be used to redeem goods and services from over 170 merchants and at 5,000 outlets islandwide. The vouchers commemorate 45 years of national service.
