Porridge from childhood at Zhen Zhou Dao

This is the place to go if you want some comfort porridge without sweating it out in a hawker centre.

Porridge from childhood at Zhen Zhou Dao

One look at the big, steaming bowl of porridge and I know I am going to like it very much.

Zhen Zhou Dao's porridge is not the smooth, paste-like congee served in Hong Kong-inspired joints. Neither is it soupy like Teochew-style porridge. It is somewhere in between. You can still see grains of rice and it is the kind of porridge I grew up on and still love.

The eatery, which opened in November, is run by Ms Grace Lim, 34, whose father is wellknown gourmand and actor Moses Lim, 63, and her husband Sean Goh, 32. This is the place to go if you want some comfort porridge without sweating it out in a hawker centre.

Portions are generous too. Minced Pork & Liver porridge ($6) comes in a huge bowl, the porridge almost obscured by minced pork, slices of pig liver and dough fritters. The crunchy anchovies are a lovely touch and the bowl comes with scallions and deep-fried shallots on the side. Add an egg for 50 cents.

Sliced Pork & Century Egg porridge ($6) is topped with chunks of the egg. There is a whole one with each order.

Porridge and yusheng go together well and Zhen Zhou Dao has a good Salmon Yusheng ($6 for small). A pile of shredded iceberg lettuce is topped with sliced raw salmon. The dressing, with lime juice, soy sauce, sesame oil and a secret ingredient, is bright and tangy. The lettuce soaks it all up and still remains crunchy.

Also good is the Braised Platter ($6), with pork belly, tau pok or beancurd puffs, beancurd and egg stewed in dark soya sauce. The gravy is delicious stirred into the porridge, another ritual from childhood.
