INGRID Michaelson first made her name with easy-listening indie pop ballads that wound up on the soundtracks of TV shows Grey's Anatomy and The Vampire Diaries.

But the singer-songwriter is undergoing a mini-metamorphosis with her latest effort Human Again, which shows off a grittier side compared to previous hits Breakable and The Way I Am. Human Again blasts off with the orchestral Fire and This is War, although elements of her folksy guitar-playing panache still remain on other tracks like Ghosts.

Fans should get used to this new side of her, she tells BT in an e-mail interview ahead of her concert next month.

"I wanted to sing out. I wanted to be bolder and stretch my vocals. That actually opened me up lyrically too," she said.

"I definitely will move further in this direction. I can't just keep doing the same thing over and over. I like to keep pushing myself."

Michaelson has not entirely turned her back on pop. In her side project Army of 3, Michaelson covered Rihanna's hit We Found Love with a fresh a cappella twist. The video posted on Michaelson's official YouTube channel grabbed over 300,000 hits.

"Anything with a beautiful melody and sentiment attracts me," she said about her choice of song.

If a new day has arrived in her music-making, it may have also sparked off something sartorially as well. Michaelson may well trade her signature spectacles - she has eight pairs - for contacts.

"I really only wear one or two pairs (of spectacles)," she said.

"Contacts sting my eyes but I want to try them again, if only for variety!"

Ingrid Michaelson will play live at the Esplanade Concert Hall on Monday, Sept 10 at 9pm. Tickets are priced S$148, S$128, S$108, S$88, S$68, S$68(Restricted View) and can be purchased through Sistic.
