19,000km bicycle ride to Singapore Swedish Erik Ohlson reached his final destination at the Merlion Park in Singapore on 27 November 2012.

SINGAPORE - He spent three years growing up in Singapore in the 1990s.

Back then, the Swede stayed at Trevose Park, a private apartment at Whitley Road, with his parents and younger brother.

And when he was six years old, he won a green bicycle in a lottery arranged by the Swedish Church here.

When Mr Erik Ohlson, now 25, wanted to return to Singapore for a visit this year, he decided to use an unconventional mode of transport.

Instead of hopping on a plane, he left Stockholm, Sweden on an icy day in February on a bicycle.

He cycled 19,000km across Europe and Asia in 91/2months.

In that time, he crossed 18 countries, including Germany, Hungary, Romania, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, China and Laos.

At around 11am last Tuesday, Mr Ohlson reached his final destination - the Merlion Park in Singapore.

Waving our national flag in his hand, he was greeted with loud cheers from his girlfriend and members of the Swedish Church in Singapore.
