Microsoft kills of Hotmail, migrates users to

SINGAPORE - Microsoft is finally killing off Hotmail, one of the first web-based e-mail services. Don't worry - if you are a faithful Hotmail user, you can still keep your e-mail address and log in with your existing username and password.

Those who can't wait to discard the Hotmail address can opt to convert their account to, according to Microsoft.

The tech giant says it intends to eventually migrate all 60 million of its Hotmail users to by this summer.

Microsoft has in recent months been consolidating many of its existing services, most notably terminating its messenger service in favour of Skype which it had acquired recently.

The software giant is also looking at simplifying its various users accounts - users can now access Windows Phone, Xbox,, Office, Skydrive, Skype and Windows 8 with a single log in.

It may be a sad day for Hotmail users, especially for those who have used it as their first web-based e-mail service but Outlook has a host of new features and enhancements that should make up for the nostalgia.

The service was originally founded by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith in July 1996 when it was known as HoTMaiL. It was acquired by Microsoft in 1997 for an estimated US$400million (S$495 million).
